Christian Lundwall Associates is redesigning the The Radison Blu Hotel, Kuwait, formerly known as The Kuwait SAS Hotel, which is due to open in 2013.

The hotel is famous for entering the Guinness World Records in 2002 for having the largest Arabic dhow ever built, the Al Hashemi II.

The dhow was commissioned by Hussain Marafie and owned by the Marafie family, owners of Radisson SAS Hotels Kuwait and measures a world record 80.4m long and 18.7m wide and weighs an estimated 2,500 tonnes.

According to Philippe Pellaud, general manager, the hotel , which celebrated its 30th anniversary last year, is going through a refurbishment to keep up with Kuwait’s rapid development, increased number of competitors entering the market as well as higher expectations of travellers.

“The total revamp will give our property fresh, modern and sophisticated look. The renovation will be finished at the beginning of 2013,” he said.

“We ended 2010 celebrating our 30th anniversary which was followed by closing the hotel’s main building for a million dollar redevelopment project. Part of our property remains open. Our facilities located outside the main building including the Al Hashemi Ballroom, six meeting rooms, the Viking Club, Al Boom steak and seafood and Rangoli all day dining restaurants plus our laundry service all remain open.”

The new lobby will combine a neutral, contemporary Scandinavian style with lavish and rich

Arabic design, whereas the rooms will offer three distinctive styles of décor: Naturally Cool, Relax and NY Mansion House.
